Kim Regenhard
Kim Regenhard was a successful human resources executive in a large corporation, happily married for more than 20 years, and mother of a young child when, in the spring of 1998, she discovered a lump in her breast. In one moment Kim’s busy, fulfilling life seemed to come to a standstill. When tests confirmed the lump was cancerous, Kim felt her world had been turned upside down.
Guided by the experience and encouragement of a friend who had also struggled through breast cancer, Kim began the overwhelming task of learning about breast cancer, breast cancer treatments, and what she might expect on the road ahead. It was a process that would ultimately lead to starting a new business, RiverStone Journals, and creating an organizer and journal for women newly diagnosed with cancer.
“The idea for the journal came from a combination of life-changing experiences. Some years ago, I witnessed my mother fight colon cancer with dignity and courage. More recently, I watched my father pass away from prostate cancer. After seeing my mother and father struggle through their cancer and the demands of treatment, I felt compelled to create a handbook that would make the battle with cancer less burdensome for those diagnosed.
“From my own experience with breast cancer, I realized a journal filled with empty pages could be overwhelming and almost intimidating. Where does one begin to write when her life is suddenly turned upside down? As I reflected on my parents’ fight with cancer, considered my needs during my own cancer experience, and listened to other breast cancer survivors share what products they used to move from diagnosis through recovery, I became convinced that what cancer patients need is a practical tool to guide them step-by-step through the cancer journey. A Survivor’s Guide for the Breast Cancer Journey was born out of that heart-felt conviction. It is a practical guide that will walk women through the emotional and physical stages of cancer, as well as through the logistical elements of treatment, providing the insight, encouragement, and order needed to focus on becoming well.”
Now cancer free, Kim manages the strategic aspects and day-to-day operations of her company, RiverStone Journals, speaks at events related to breast cancer and other women's issues, and relies heavily on her planner to organize the demands of her work in order to have ample time and energy to stay well and enjoy her family.
